Derek Webb – “New Law”

“New Law” Vacation from James Kanka on Vimeo.

don’t teach me about politics and government
just tell me who to vote for
don’t teach me about truth and beauty
just label my music
don’t teach me how to live like a free man
just give me a new law

(chorus)
i don’t wanna know if the answers aren’t easy
so just bring it down from the mountain to me
i want a new law
i want a new law
gimme that new law

don’t teach me about moderation and liberty
i prefer a shot of grape juice
don’t teach me about loving my enemies
don’t teach me how to listen to the Spirit
just give me a new law

(chorus)

what’s the use in trading a law you can never keep
for one you can that cannot get you anything
do not be afraid

A few weeks ago when I was working all the time I started listening to Derek Webb’s Album “Mocking Bird.”  I wouldn’t say it’s the best music but I think the lyrics are amazing.  My favorite is “Love is not Against the Law,” look it up if you have the chance.  To view this video I made in HD click on the link below the video.  It’s the first time I’ve made anything HD. Here’s what I said on the Vimeo page:
This was an experiment. The beginning of this month Dani and I went back to DC/VA and I thought I’d try to make a project while on vacation… a lip-dub with a DSLR. I’d recently been listening to Derek Webb’s album, “Mocking Bird,” and really like the lyrics to “New Law” and “Love is not Against the Law.” I like the latter the most but “New Law” had a great ending that I could visualize.

Listen the the lyrics… that is why I used this song. It’s a Christian artist who is rebuking/repenting for the Church. I love it.

In DC I got a little busy visiting friends and didn’t have too much time with them so I decided there wasn’t enough time to devote to my project and when I got home realized I was missing a lot so I just threw in the other random photos of our trip. That still wasn’t enough… luckily we were on our way to Michigan for Dani’s cousins wedding and I took some pictures of the leaves changing colors on our drive back from the lake house in Gaylord–that’s something I miss here in LA.

For the lip dub I basically slowed the song to 25% and had people mouth the sounds as I shot them and then set the frame rate to about 10fps… give or take. In the future I’d get a ND filter and slow the shutter and use a tripod more with and moving background… or shoot more at night with lights in the bg.
