Derek Webb - "New Law"

"New Law" Vacation from James Kanka on Vimeo.

don’t teach me about politics and government
just tell me who to vote for
don’t teach me about truth and beauty
just label my music
don’t teach me how to live like a free man
just give me a new law

(chorus)
i don’t wanna know if the answers aren’t easy
so just bring it down from the mountain to me
i want a new law
i want a new law
gimme that new law

don’t teach me about moderation and liberty
i prefer a shot of grape juice
don’t teach me about loving my enemies
don’t teach me how to listen to the Spirit
just give me a new law

(chorus)

what’s the use in trading a law you can never keep
for one you can that cannot get you anything
do not be afraid

A few weeks ago when I was working all the time I started listening to Derek Webb's Album "Mocking Bird."  I wouldn't say it's the best music but I think the lyrics are amazing.  My favorite is "Love is not Against the Law," look it up if you have the chance.  To view this video I made in HD click on the link below the video.  It's the first time I've made anything HD. Here's what I said on the Vimeo page:
This was an experiment. The beginning of this month Dani and I went back to DC/VA and I thought I'd try to make a project while on vacation... a lip-dub with a DSLR. I'd recently been listening to Derek Webb's album, "Mocking Bird," and really like the lyrics to "New Law" and "Love is not Against the Law." I like the latter the most but "New Law" had a great ending that I could visualize.

Listen the the lyrics... that is why I used this song. It's a Christian artist who is rebuking/repenting for the Church. I love it.

In DC I got a little busy visiting friends and didn't have too much time with them so I decided there wasn't enough time to devote to my project and when I got home realized I was missing a lot so I just threw in the other random photos of our trip. That still wasn't enough... luckily we were on our way to Michigan for Dani's cousins wedding and I took some pictures of the leaves changing colors on our drive back from the lake house in Gaylord--that's something I miss here in LA.

For the lip dub I basically slowed the song to 25% and had people mouth the sounds as I shot them and then set the frame rate to about 10fps... give or take. In the future I'd get a ND filter and slow the shutter and use a tripod more with and moving background... or shoot more at night with lights in the bg.

Interview w/ an Investment Banker

Danielle and I haven't lost anything, but then again we never made anything on the market because we never invested in stocks. The economy has effected everyone we know... at best we can laugh at it and learn from the mistakes.

Picked this up from from TickleBooth by DeK who linked to TheLibertyVoice.com:

Like America, some of the greatest British journalists and analysts also happen to be comedians. Watching The Last Laugh with John Bird (in the guise of investment banker, George Parr) and John Fortune (together known as the Long Johns), the same can certainly be said in Britain as well.

This is a transcript of this insightful comedian team who brilliantly and accurately describe the mindset of the investment banking community in this satirical interview. It was especially insightful considering this was recorded last year.

Watch it (with transcript) or below.

Thursday night in Michigan

This is a four part entry:

I forgot to mention, last episode of "Clean House" I was on before visiting DC we had a guest host, Kelli Williams, or Laura from "Family Matters." Listening to her voice in conversation transported me back to the feeling of being a kid again.

Danielle and I had a great time in DC although I wish we had more time to spend with family and friends... I felt very rushed for most of the trip and didn't get to see everyone I would have liked to.

Living in LA I've become very aware of the fact that we live with famous people. Yesterday I saw Christopher Lloyd, Doc Brown from Back to the Future, at LAX and later we shared a flight out to Chicago with the first lady of California, Maria Shriver.

And last but not least... there is a good chance I'll be working on William Shatner's talk show in November, thanks to Wilson, a friend that the Charon's introduced me to about six months ago. He just met the requirements to get into the Grip Union! That's big news and I'm really happy for him.

Liberty Mutual Commercial

A few months ago Motion Theory, the company that put together the "Pork and Beans" music video for Weezer and does those crazy commercials with Tiger Woods solving a rubik cube and walking on water, shot a commercial for Liberty Mutual on our street. While in DC I saw it on TV... here is a crapy youtube version of it. Our apartment complex lines the right side when the camera looks down the street. If it wasn't out of focus you could make out our entry way about halfway down. I was there when they shot this... it was a pretty big production.

The house that the actor walks out of was constructed in the front yard of one of our buildings. It was interesting to see how it was all faked. Check it out.

It's funny to see your front yard in a national commercial.
